Happy Wednesday, everyone! Not only is today Earth Day, but it is also Animal Kingdom Theme Park’s 28th birthday! When the park opened to the public on April 22, 1998, not only did it have traditional Disney park elements like attractions and shows, but it also gave guests new ways to observe nature and learn about conservation. Numerous animal species, lush landscapes, and immersive theming are all highlights of the park to this day. The available attractions and lands in Disney World’s 4th theme park have changed since it opened, and there are many more exciting changes we can look forward to in the near future. Today, we’re going to go wild and talk about a visit to Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Let’s dive in!
Animal Kingdom Is Not Just A “Half Day Park”
At one time, many people considered Animal Kingdom to be a “half day theme park”. This was due to the belief that there wasn’t much to do besides look at the animals. It’s true that the park’s dedication to wildlife and conservation does mean there is an enormous focus on nature in the park. You can definitely spend time wandering along multiple nature trails and observing animal exhibits during your visit. However, there is so much more to this park! Animal Kingdom has a number of popular rides, breathtaking shows, delicious places to eat, and plenty of immersive theming throughout. Even with the current construction (we’ll touch on that later), you will still find plenty to do here!

Other Ways Animal Kingdom Is Different
Animal Kingdom is different from the other Disney World parks due in large part to the animals. Although it is the largest in size of the four Disney World theme parks, a lot of space is actually inaccessible to guests. The land is instead used for animal habitats.
Disney has several measures in place for the comfort and safety of the animals. If you look at the entertainment guide for Animal Kingdom, you will notice there are no nighttime fireworks shows at this park. The sights and sounds of a fireworks spectacular are exciting for humans, but would be extremely disruptive for the animals that call this park home.

Another difference is that you will not find balloons for sale in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In fact, you can’t bring balloons you have purchased elsewhere into the park either! They’ll be confiscated at the entrance and put into “balloon daycare” until you are ready to leave. Again, this policy is for the safety of the animals. If a balloon were to pop, the debris could be dangerous if it got into any animal habitats. On a related note, balloons are also not allowed in rooms at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (they must be stored in your vehicle or with Bell Services).
Balloons are not the only items you will notice are missing from Animal Kingdom. This theme park does not provide plastic straws or cup lids, either. These items would also be dangerous for the animals if they wound up inside an enclosure. Therefore, locations inside the park provide paper straws instead.
Park Lands
Like other Disney theme parks, Animal Kingdom is divided up into themed sections:
- Oasis
- Discovery Island
- Asia
- Africa
- Pandora – The World of Avatar

DinoLand U.S.A. Makes Way For Tropical Americas
By now, you have likely heard that Animal Kingdom’s DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed to make way for a brand new land themed to Tropical Americas. While the extinction of DinoLand U.S.A. meant the closure of some beloved attractions and experiences, Tropical Americas is sure to bring some very exciting new experiences in the future.

Highlights of Tropical Americas include a new quick service restaurant, a carousel, and attractions themed to Encanto and Indiana Jones. Construction is ongoing, and the new land is expected to open in 2027. Stay tuned to MouseHouseNews.net for more details!
Bluey Experience Arrives In Summer 2026
In February 2026, Disney temporarily closed the Wildlife Express Train at Animal Kingdom. This was the only way to travel to and from Conservation Station (also temporarily closed). Conservation Station featured a working veterinary clinic, animal exhibits, an animation experience, and the “Affection Section” (an area where you could interact with and pet a variety of domesticated animals). These temporary closures were necessary to make way for a new experience coming in Summer 2026.
Get ready to meet Bluey & Bingo, play some games, and learn about animals native to Australia at Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station! These new additions are expected to open May 26, 2026 as part of the Cool Kids’ Summer promotion. Disney hasn’t specified whether the Bluey experience will be permanent; however, given the show’s popularity, it’s expected that Bluey will be sticking around for awhile. Speaking of Bluey, did you know you can watch the show on your resort’s TV? Check out the resort TV guide and tune in (when you’re not busy watching Mickey Mouse shorts, that is!).
Characters At Animal Kingdom Theme Park
Bluey and Bingo join a number of other characters you’ll find at Animal Kingdom. Meet other friends including:
- Mickey and Minnie Mouse meet fellow explorers dressed in their finest adventurer outfits!
- Judy Hopps & Nick Wilde are ready to celebrate Zoogether Day with you
- Kevin from Up! roams around Discovery Island
- Moana is ready to share tales of her adventures sailing across the sea

Keep an eye out for other characters from time to time as well. Earth Week (around April 22nd) is especially exciting because rare characters often make an appearance! Check your My Disney Experience app for daily meet and greet listings, times, and locations.
If character dining is on your wishlist, you can make a reservation for Tusker House Restaurant. Here, you’ll be able to meet friends including Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and more, all while dining on a delicious buffet of options.
Attractions
In addition to character meet and greets, you’ll find a variety of attractions in Animal Kingdom.
Africa
With access to Rafiki’s Planet Watch temporarily closed, the Africa section currently offers one signature attraction:

- Kilimanjaro Sarafis – In this attraction, you’ll board an open-air safari vehicle and head out for the park’s acres of savanna. Your guide will point out the many animals that call Animal Kingdom home and give you facts along the way. While listed as approximately 18 minutes in duration, this attraction can sometimes take longer. Animals roam freely inside the savanna, and some of them have been known to block the roadways at times. Each ride is unique! It’s definitely a must-do for animal lovers out there.
Asia
The Asia section of Animal Kingdom features two very different thrill rides:
- Expedition Everest – This roller coaster takes riders on a perilous, high speed journey to outrun the Yeti. Expect fast drops, high speeds, and backwards track section plunging into total darkness!

- Kali River Rapids – This thrilling whitewater raft adventure takes you careening through the jungle. Waterfalls, raging currents, and a 20-foot slope await you. You will get wet!
Pandora – The World of Avatar
Pandora – The World of Avatar is a highly-immersive land inspired by the epic James Cameron film, Avatar. This section features two attractions:
- Na’vi River Journey – This ride is a slow-moving boat ride that takes you through a bioluminescent rainforest home to the flora and fauna of Pandora. Your journey culminates with the Na’vi Shaman of Songs, one of Disney World’s most advanced Audio Animatronics.

- Avatar Flight of Passage – You’ll board the back of a mountain banshee and soar high above the Pandoran landscape in this 3D attraction in your own flight of passage. This breathtaking ride continues to be one of the most popular attractions in Disney World, as evidenced by the frequently long wait times. Sivako! (Rise to the Challenge!)
Shows & Entertainment
Rides are not the only entertainment you’ll find in Animal Kingdom. There are also a number of entertaining shows throughout the day. Be sure to check your My Disney Experience app for daily showtimes for each experience.
Discovery Island
On Discovery Island, you’ll find the Zootopia: Better Zoogether. In Fall 2025, this 4D show replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug! in the Tree of Life Theater. Better Zoogether immerses guests in a celebration of Zoogether Day. Expect to see friends like Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, special performances from across Zootopia, and an epic musical finale.

Several times per day near the Tree of Life, you can also experience the wonder and majesty of Winged Encounters – The Kingdom Takes Flight. Six different species of South American macaws swoop and glide overhead during this breathtaking experience.
Africa
In the Africa section, prepare to be amazed by a stunning performance of Festival of the Lion King. This approximately 30 minute show features lively music, interactive elements, puppetry, and absolutely breathtaking acrobatics! You’ll definitely want to arrive early, as the theater often reaches capacity.

Asia
- Feathered Friends in Flight! is fascinating show featuring free-flying birds in an open-air theater. You’ll learn about many different kinds of birds and their unique abilities during the performance.
- Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…and Beyond! was technically listed in the DinoLand U.S.A. section of the park. Even though DinoLand has closed to make way for the Tropical Americas, you can still catch this show inside Theater in the Wild. Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…and Beyond! relays the fan favorite Finding Nemo story from a “new point of view” through live broadway-caliber vocal performances, puppetry, and special lighting and sound effects.

Dining
You have numerous dining choices during a day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Quick service locations, snack carts, bars and lounges, character dining, and even signature dining are all available here. For purposes of this post, we’re just going to highlight a few of your dining options. Check a park map or your My Disney Experience app for the full selection!
Discovery Island
- Creature Comforts – This location gets a shoutout because it’s the park’s Starbucks. You can find all of your favorite Starbucks beverages along with Disney baked goods.
- Flame Tree Barbecue – Satisfy your hunger with a variety of delicious barbecue offerings. You can grab chicken, ribs, pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and more here. There is plenty of shaded seating out back for eating and relaxing as well!
- Isle of Java – This spot offers snacks like Mickey Pretzels and Churros as well as some tasty beverages. My top recommendation here is the Macaw Specialty Beverage. It’s a refreshing drink made with layers of frozen Minute Maid Lemonade, frozen Fanta Cherry, and frozen Fanta Blue Raspberry.

- Nomad Lounge – Enter this relaxing oasis next door to Tiffins Restaurant for a variety of delicious bites and beverages. Our pal, Marcus, dedicated a full afternoon here so he could give you his full review. I think it’s safe to say he’ll be back soon for more churros!
- Terra Treats – Terra Treats is another snack spot where you can find favorite ice cream treats. Not only can you purchase ice cream cones, cups, and floats, but you can also grab some unique treats as well. If you’re looking for the viral Cookie Dough Brownie Ice Cream Sandwich or the formerly Passholder-exclusive Carrot Cake Sundae, this is where you’ll find them!

- Tiffins Restaurant – Would you believe there is a signature restaurant inside Animal Kingdom theme park? Tiffins features a globally-inspired menu of adventurous delicacies. If you don’t have time for a full signature dining experience, some of the restaurant’s menu items can also found at Nomad Lounge as well.
Africa
- Tamu Tamu Refreshments – Grab some dessert in Africa’s Harambe Village. At Tamu Tamu Refreshments, you can indulge in multiple Dole Whip floats and treats.

- Tusker House Restaurant – As was mentioned earlier, Tusker House Restaurant is a character dining location. The character lineup usually includes friends like Donald, Mickey, Daisy, and Goofy. Note that character appearances are subject to change. Each character is dressed in his or her best safari-themed outfit. Get ready to compare notes on animals you’ve seen or adventures you’ve had! Along with character interactions, this restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch/dinner. Each meal serves up a buffet filled with African-inspired flavors (and familiar favorites).
Asia
- Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Company – There are two Joffrey’s locations at Animal Kingdom. You’ll see the first one outside of the park’s entrance, which is perfect for grabbing your rope drop dose of caffeine. However, I recommend heading to the other location in Animal Kingdom’s Asia section. There, you can find one of my favorite specialty Joffrey’s beverages: The Lion’s Latte. It’s a blend of espresso, white chocolate, and coconut, available hot or iced.

Pandora – World of Avatar
- Pongu Pongu – For some quick Pandoran refreshments, stop by Pongu Pongu. You’ll be able to grab alcoholic or non-alcoholic versions of specialty beverages like the Night Blossom or Nightwraith Blaze. This snack stand also features the somewhat divisive Pongu Lumpia (a pineapple and cream cheese filled spring roll). It’s worth a try to see what you think of it!

- Satu’li Canteen – The cheeseburger pods are perhaps the most famous menu item at this quick service. You’ll also find a variety of unique and inspired bowls, desserts, and beverages. What better way to immerse yourself in the World of Avatar than with some impressive (and delicious) food?
Trails & Animal Habitats
As a theme park devoted to promoting conservation and wildlife awareness, Animal Kingdom features numerous self-guided walking trails. Along these paths, you can observe a variety of creatures in carefully replicated habitats. Because they are self-guided, you can take as much or as little time as you wish to make your way around these trails.
- Discovery Island Trails – These winding trails meander around and near the base of the Tree of Life, Animal Kingdom’s park icon. You can get an up-close look at the hundreds of intricate animal carvings covering the Tree of Life. These paths also provide quiet, shaded spots to rest and observation points for a number of wildlife exhibits. Animals you may see along the way include Galapagos tortoises, Asian small-clawed otters, red kangaroos, ring-tailed lemurs, and numerous birds (including flamingos, macaws, and storks).

- Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail – In the Africa section, you can journey along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Along the way, you’ll discover observation areas to view a number of African animals. Animals you may see along your self-guided tour include meerkats, zebras, hippos, and lowland gorillas. There is also an aviary along the trail where you can see a number of African birds.

- Maharajah Jungle Trek – This highly immersive jungle trail features waterfalls, footbridges, and of course, plenty of animals! Keep an eye out for Asian tigers, Komodo dragons, water buffalo, and another aviary that’s home to over 50 species of birds!
Tree of Life Awakenings
As was previously mentioned, Animal Kingdom does not have a nightly fireworks show. While it does not offer fireworks, the park does have a projection show known as Tree of Life Nighttime Awakenings. During the show, music accompanies images that are projected onto the Tree of Life. When available, Tree of Life Awakenings begins after dark and repeats approximately every 10 minutes until park close. Note that it’s more common to see this nighttime entertainment in fall and winter when sunset is earlier. Unfortunately, it may not be offered during your trip. Be sure to check your My Disney Experience for updated showtimes and availability,
