April 16, 2001 was a special day at Walt Disney World. This was the opening day of Disney’s newest non-DVC (Disney Vacation Club) deluxe resort. Since opening, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has been delighting guests from all over. Today is the resort’s 25th birthday, and the MouseHouseNews.net team witnessed cast members celebrating. Some animal care Cast Members were taking photos on the Sunset Savanna beneath one of our guest rooms.
We already have an in-depth review of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge posted on this blog. However, we are in the process of creating a video tour of the resort. While we were filming a room tour, we were greeted by a tower of giraffes beneath our balcony. The giraffes were so close you could literally hear them eating!
There are three types of non-DVC rooms available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge: Resort View, Water View, and Savanna View. Our room had a Resort View. So, how were we able to have giraffes roaming around below us? The answer lies with the layout of Animal Kingdom Lodge.
This resort sits on property that is home to four lush savannas, over 200 hoofed animals and birds, and over 30 species of animals.That means there are a lot of rooms in the resort that have views of a savanna. However, some rooms don’t have a 100% clear view. If the view is not clear, Disney does not sell them as Savanna View rooms. As such, you can pay the cheapest price for a Resort View room, but still get a partially obstructed savanna view from your balcony. Your mileage may vary.
There may be a pole in the way if you look in a certain direction, or there may be a fence right below you. However, a Resort View room does not mean there is no hope for you to see animals. Rooms that face the parking lot have that problem, but most Resort View rooms here don’t fall into that category.
