These boats travel across the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake, providing a completely different experience than taking the monorail or a bus.
For Disney Adults staying at one of the participating resorts, the boat can be especially appealing after a long day in Magic Kingdom. Instead of immediately stepping onto another crowded vehicle, you can sit down, watch the shoreline drift by, and decompress. That distinction matters more than it might sound.

The Magic Kingdom Ferryboat Is Its Own Experience

The FriendShip Boats provide access between EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, making the water route another option when traveling between those two parks. For Disney Adults, that opens up an underrated strategy: use the boat as part of your evening rather than treating it as merely a backup transportation option.
The Sassagoula River Cruise Serves A Very Targeted Audience
If there is one Disney World boat route that doesn’t get as much attention, it is the Sassagoula River Cruise. The service connects Disney Springs with several Disney Resort hotels, including Disney’s Old Key West Resort, Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside and Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter.
Unlike the Magic Kingdom ferry, this ride feels less like traditional theme park transportation and more like a leisurely cruise. The winding Sassagoula River gives guests a chance to see the resort property from a completely different perspective. That makes it particularly appealing when you have no reason to hurry.
For example, instead of driving to Disney Springs for dinner, a guest staying at Port Orleans – Riverside or French Quarter can take the boat and make the journey part of the evening. That is exactly the kind of small Disney World experience that can make a vacation feel less rushed.
Are Disney World Boats Faster Than Buses?
Usually, you should not choose a Disney boat because you expect it to be the fastest possible transportation option. Disney says most water-transportation routes operate at approximately 15- to 30-minute intervals, although operating hours can vary based on water and weather conditions.
You also need to account for the time spent waiting at the dock and the fact that some routes include multiple stops. The real advantage is that the ride itself can be more enjoyable.
If you are trying to make a dining reservation in 20 minutes, the boat might not be your smartest choice. If you have an hour to spare and want to enjoy the atmosphere? That is a different story.

Not every water route serves the same purpose, so here is how I would rank them for Disney Adults looking for something beyond basic transportation.
Best For Magic Kingdom: The Water Launches
The resort boats serving the Magic Kingdom area are perfect when you want to turn the trip to or from the park into part of the experience.
Best For Park Hopping: The FriendShip Boats
If you are park hopping between EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, the FriendShip Boats give you an alternative to walking, buses, and the Skyliner. They also make it easy to incorporate the EPCOT resort area into your plans.
Best For A Relaxing Evening: Sassagoula River Cruise
This gets my vote for the boat ride to take when you are not in a hurry. The Sassagoula River setting makes the journey feel like an attraction rather than a commute. Just know that you are unable to board a boat from Disney Springs unless you have a resort, dining, or experience reservation at a Disney resort.
Best Entrance To Magic Kingdom: The Ferryboat
There is something special about approaching Magic Kingdom across Seven Seas Lagoon. If you arrive at the Transportation and Ticket Center and have the choice between the ferry and monorail, consider taking the ferry at least once.
What Disney Adults Should Know Before Boarding
There are a few practical details worth knowing.
Boats are subject to weather and water conditions. Operating hours may vary based on those conditions.
Strollers must be folded and stowed out of the aisle. This guidance is for my Disney Adults with small children in tow.
Luggage is not permitted on Disney watercraft. If you are checking in to a hotel and hoping to use Disney Transportation to arrive, luggage is a no go. Alcohol is also prohibited aboard the watercraft.
Not every boat trip is direct. Some destinations will have a stopover (or two, or three) along the way, or may require a connecting mode of transportation.

Don’t Sleep On Disney World Boat Transportation
Disney World has plenty of transportation options, but that does not mean they all serve the same purpose.
The buses are practical. The monorail is iconic. The Skyliner is undeniably fun. The boats, however, occupy their own little corner of the transportation world. They can be useful when you need to get somewhere, but their biggest advantage is that getting there can actually be part of the experience.
For Disney Adults, that makes the boats worth seeking out rather than simply taking them when nothing else is available. The next time you find yourself staring at a crowded bus queue, look toward the water. There might be a boat waiting. Sometimes, the slower route is the one that makes the better Disney day.
