The Disney Skyliner Was STRUGGLING Yesterday; What To Do If This Happens During Your Visit

Disney Adults love a nice, smooth ride on the Disney Skyliner. What a great way to see the Walt Disney World Resort from a unique angle! Even on a hot day, there can be some great breezes up in the air. However, there have been times when the Skyliner seems to not be at 100%. Yesterday was one of those days.

The MouseHouseNews.net team was visiting EPCOT yesterday when we got stuck on the Skyliner at Disney’s Riviera Resort. There was a 15 minute delay while Cast Members worked to get the gondolas running again. In fact, we spotted a couple of gondolas be evacuated just before the all-clear was given and we were able to continue our journey. There seemed to be a technician of some sort looking in each gondola as they entered the EPCOT International Gateway station, so that seemed a little odd. We soon realized, however, that operations did not last long. When we were about to park hop to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we saw signs indicating that the Disney Skyliner was out of service.

What Happens When The Skyliner Pauses

The Skyliner typically pauses during lightning, high winds, or technical checks. In the case of yesterday, there was clearly something else at play. Cast Members are posted at stations along the affected route to help with questions and resorts are quick to step in with alternate transportation, so the key is staying flexible and knowing your next move.

You can call for help from any of the Skyliner gondolas

If you are on a gondola at a Skyliner station when the issue occurs, Cast Members will get you off of the Skyliner and direct you to alternate transportation. However, if you are on a gondola and the Skyliner stops, be sure to stay calm. Rest assured that Cast Members are working on a solution to get you safely grounded. In case you have any worries while in the gondola, you can call 407-827-2515. For a true emergency, there is also an Emergency Call Box button on each gondola.

The Interruptions May Not Affect All Routes

It is worth noting that there are actually three Skyliner routes:

  • EPCOT to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort (with a stop at Disney’s Riviera)
  • Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Disney’s Pop Century/Disney’s Art of Animation Resorts
  • Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Disney’s Hollywood Studios
This is the Skyliner route from Pop Century/Art of Animation to Caribbean Beach Resort

If the reason for the closure is technical in nature, it is possible that the closure only affects one of the routes. Yesterday, it was the EPCOT to Caribbean Beach route that was closed. Travel to Hollywood Studios was unaffected, and the Skyliner there did not shut down.

Bus Transportation Steps Up

When the Skyliner goes down, Disney buses become your primary backup. Resorts served by the Skyliner like Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort or Disney’s Pop Century Resort will begin running buses to nearby parks.

Expect slightly longer wait times since demand increases fast. Lines can build quickly, especially during peak travel windows like early morning rope drop or post-fireworks exits.

Walking Paths Can Save Time

Depending on where you are, walking might actually be your fastest option. As MouseHouseNews.net previously reported, guests staying at Disney resorts within walking distance to the parks can walk to EPCOT’s International Gateway entrance in about 5–15 minutes.

There are also walking paths to many Magic Kingdom area resorts

A walking path also connects the same resorts to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, making it a clutch backup when transportation gets crowded or the Skyliner is unavailable.

Minnie Vans and Rideshare Options

If time is tight, consider using a Minnie Van™ through Lyft or a standard rideshare service. Minnie Vans can drop you closer to park entrances than regular rideshare vehicles, which helps shave off extra walking time. This option comes with a higher price tag, though it can be worth it if you’re trying to make a Lightning Lane or dining reservation.

Timing Is Everything

If the Skyliner closure is weather-related, there’s a good chance it will reopen once conditions improve. Short delays might make it smarter to wait things out rather than jump into a long bus line. Be sure to ask a Cast Member for the latest status.

Keep It Moving, No Matter What

A Skyliner closure is more of a detour than a disaster. Walt Disney World has built-in redundancy across its transportation network, so there’s always another way to keep your day on track. A little flexibility, and a quick pivot, can make the difference between feeling stuck and staying in control of your plans.
