Top Disney World COASTER Picks While We Wait For Big Thunder Mountain And Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster To Return

Are you a thrill seeker planning your next vacation? While Disney World isn’t necessarily known for having the tallest or fastest roller coasters in Orlando, it does have a few options for adrenaline junkies. Some of the biggest thrills at each of the four Disney parks are courtesy of roller coasters.

There are two Disney coasters currently closed for refurbishment. In Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is expected to reopen in early May 2026. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster recently closed for refurbishment in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and is slated to reopen sometime this summer. As we await the return of these attractions, we thought it would be fun to highlight a few of the other top roller coasters you can currently ride in Walt Disney World.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

One of the most thrilling attractions in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. You’ll find this roller coaster in the Asia section of the theme park. It’s impossible to miss the nearly 200-foot tall mountain housing the attraction! The intense storytelling begins in the queue. Learn about the Yeti’s lore through real photographs and artifacts from the Himalayan Mountains. Will the numerous, mysterious disappearances deep in the mountains keep you from booking your own expedition? Consider yourself warned.

Don’t forget to smile as you plummet down the side of Everest!

How do you feel about trying to outrun a Yeti? When you take on Expedition Everest, you’ll be in for fast drops, high speeds, and a significant stretch of track careening backwards into total darkness! Throughout the ride, you’ll catch numerous glimpses of the formidable Yeti in close pursuit of your expedition train car.

If you manage to escape the mountain, you’ll find Serka Zong Bazaar. This gift shop features a variety of Yeti and Himalayan-themed merchandise you can take home to commemorate your adventure (and survival).

EPCOT

EPCOT is home to one of the most popular attractions in Disney World, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. After you explore the Wonders of Xandar pavilion and learn about similarities between Earth and Xandar’s galaxies, you’ll board a Starjumper with other EPCOT Terrans on a mission to help the Guardians retrieve the Cosmic Generator (and save Earth in the process).

This fan-favorite roller coaster features the first ever reverse-launch on a Disney coaster, and the thrills just keep coming. Throughout your ride through the galaxy, you’ll experience 360-degree spins, darkness, and a high energy soundtrack. Rocket may be skeptical of your success, but the Guardians are counting on you!

That reverse-launch is EVERYTHING!

The soundtrack for this ride has six potential songs:

  • “Conga” by Miami Sound Machine
  • “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps
  • “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears
  • “I Ran (So Far Away)” by A Flock of Seagulls
  • “One Way or Another” by Blondie
  • “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire

Magic Kingdom

Get digitized and enter the Grid in Magic Kingdom for TRON Lightcycle/Run. This indoor/outdoor roller coaster definitely provides the thrills! From the unique Lightcycle ride vehicles and high-speed launch, to the impressive outdoor canopy section, it’s an experience like none other. TRON is one of the fastest Disney coasters in the world, clocking in a top speed around 59 mph. Speed along as part of Team Blue against Team Orange in a high-stakes race filled with twists, turns, and drops. Though it’s over in a flash (the ride less than two minutes long), you will continue to feel the adrenaline rush and excitement long after your ride is complete.

Hold on tight for the launch!

If you’re concerned about how the motorbike-like ride vehicles work (or whether you will fit), there are test vehicles available within the queue. Another thing you should know about TRON is that you will need to store any items you have with you inside of a locker prior to boarding the ride.

An Extra Perk!

One of the best parts about all three of these roller coasters is that they feature on-ride attraction photos. Capture memories of the thrills as part of your Memory Maker purchase or through buying individual photos.
