The One-Of-A-Kind DIY Souvenir You Can Make at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

When you are on your Walt Disney World Vacation, it is important to find that one (or two, or three) souvenir(s) you can look at in the future and remember your magical vacation. Of course, being that you are having such a great time when you purchase the item(s), you already know that the price will probably be as high as your happiness level is at the time you are shopping. But what if there was a way that you could not only purchase a souvenir from your Disney World vacation, but also create the Disney souvenir while on your trip?

All Disney Resorts Collection Hotels offer activities that you can enjoy at your hotel. Some of the common activities offered at nearly all Disney resorts include roasting marshmallows, watching Movies Under the Stars, and making Mickey tie-dye shirts. Some of these activities are free, and some cost a nominal fee. No theme park ticket needed! You can find more information about these activities and when they occur posted around the resort, or stop by the front desk for more information. We found one of the more unique activities over at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, and it is an activity that allows you to take home your own handiwork.

Spanish Mosaic Art at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Spanish Mosaic Art is an experience offered in the Dahlia Lounge on the 16th floor of Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The experience is currently offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 1:00 PM. In this experience, you will have the opportunity to create traditional Spanish artwork in the form of a mosaic while designing a Disney character such as Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse. Erin and I recently attended the Spanish Mosaic Art workshop at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, and we are happy to provide this review.

The mosaic backer has been traced onto the paper, and the glass tiles selected

Upon checking in for the event, you will choose which Disney character you want to create for your Spanish mosaic. Erin chose Minnie Mouse and I chose Mickey. You will receive a mosaic backer and some paper on which you will trace the outline of the backer. Next, you will select a seat that is comfortable for you in the lounge. You’ll then start by tracing the outline of the backer onto the paper you received.

Designing the layout of the tiles on the paper first, which allows you to make any changes until you get the design right

You will then be instructed to choose the glass tiles you want on your mosaic (they have a wide variety of colors, so you can personalize it to your color preferences). Now is the time where you start to design your layout by laying the tiles on the paper, making sure that the tiles all fit inside the outline. Once you are happy with your design, you will be provided with some glue, a brush, and some plaster so you can transfer your design onto the backer.

The design of the Mickey mosaic has been finalized on paper

The instructor will be there for any questions or issues you have, so you are never left totally alone to your own devices. Also, there are select drinks for sale from the lounge if you would like one. In the end, you will take home your unique Disney Spanish mosaic in a cardboard container to keep it safe. This piece of art will still need to be buffed with an alcohol wipe (provided at the event) after about 6 hours to remove the excess plaster film from the tiles, and it won’t be completely cured for about 24 hours, so make sure this is not the last activity you are doing before taking a flight home. However, once you arrive home, you can proudly display your handmade souvenir that you made right at Walt Disney World (the backer is wall-mountable via a hook).

Once the tiles are in place, the piece is covered in plaster which will need to be removed from the tiles in 6 hours

The Spanish Mosaic Art experience currently costs $30 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. It does fill up often, so you will want to reserve this event as soon as you can. Much like Advance Dining Reservations, you can reserve this activity from the My Disney Experience website up to 60 days in advance. If you have a hotel reservation linked to your account in the My Disney Experience website, you can make your dining and experience reservations for your entire trip (for the first 10 days of your trip) 60 days before your check-in date. You do not have to stay at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort to participate, but if you are using Disney Transportation to visit the resort, Disney asks that you allow up to 1.5 hours to make the appropriate transfers. You can expect this activity to last around 1.5 – 2 hours as well.

This is the Mickey mosaic about 7 hours later, after the plaster was buffed off of the tiles

If you love the idea of literally having a hand in making your Walt Disney World souvenir, this may be the activity for you! It could also make a great gift for a Disney fan in your life that screams “I’m thinking of you while on my trip”. We had fun doing this activity, so it is highly recommended. If you have this planned for your next visit to Walt Disney World, we hope you enjoy it too, and stay tuned to Mouse House News for more Disney Vacation News and Reviews For Disney Adults.
